A Northern Picture
This piece is a tone poem that was inspired by various places in the Lake District with a ‘nod’ to the Highlands of Scotland. The piece opens with echoes from the past and then develops material based on the majesty of the countryside, the mysticism of ancient peoples and festivals and dancing that would have taken place at the Castlerigg stone circle. After an original Scots melody (one of the oldest written down) the music closes with the earlier assertive dance music.
